When I'm actually "working" (I use the term very loosely as to me it's fun and wonderful) I am unable to think of anything else other than what I'm doing. It's an advantage of being a photographer. There's the viewfinder, there's thinking about th...

Hi Ruth, your photography is truly inspiring! Love the spiders, the colours are amazing. Also your gear that you told Annelise about, would love to have half of that stuff!

Hello Ruth,
I am feeling exactly the same way as yourself and even although I have made a few sales on sites such as Zazzle and Redbubble, it is not making me a living, that's for sure. I have spent hundreds of hours trying to promote my work but the bottom line is:- that there are many, many great wildlife photographers out there that we are competing against; the poor state of the world economy, many amateur photographers can take reasonable shots due to the improvements in cameras; it's "who" you know; need money to advertise and truly launch ourselves etc, etc

I get very despondent but there is something inside of me that will not give up as I love what I do, even if I am the only one who appreciates it.

Enter as many competitions as you can as this can get your name out there a bit more as well. Make sure you have a website, blog, RSS feed etc and continually update it with fresh material etc. Good luck and you are not alone - it is very tough and competitive field! Lesley

Hi Ruth,
Yes being the only artist in your own exhibition is a bit on the nervy end of the scale, but it is so much better for the overall presentation of work. My paintings do tend to make others look a bit washed out..so it is better that I do it alone and capture the imagination fully of the viewers. I am going to rearrange and add to the exhibition in the next few days, just to change the mood, concept and colour scheme. The worst thing is transporting so many paintings at once..I am always worried about the "damage factor!"
I have had many people suggest other ways to get my work out (a book has been suggested to me too), although I am keen, the idea of taking that first step is quite daunting along with the committment and work that goes with it. Because of my injury, I find that at times, I just want to hide and paint. And then...I think, "Hmmmm - I really need to find a way to make a "real" living. Perhaps a book would be the answer???

You are a very talented photographer Ruth and I also love your latest photos - koalas are drop dead gorgeous plus I have never seen a spider with such bright colouring - that is a special shot indeed. Thank you very much for adding them to your gallery for us to drool over! Lesley

Hello Annelise and Cheryl, thank you, feedback on my work is always appreciated (I guess it's the insecure artist inside me). The frogmouth was a young adult and I must admit I'm very fond of these unique birds. I'm a serious amateur wildlife photographer (turning freelance in the next few months if all goes well). Annelise, you may regret asking an obsessive photographer what gear they use as my kit includes a Nikon D300 and Nikon D70s digital SLRs, Nikkor 60-400mm AF VR f4.5-5.6D Telephoto; Nikkor AF 70-200mm f4-5.6; Nikkor AFS 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 ED; Tamron SP AF 90mm f2.8 Macro; Full set of extension tubes from 12 to 36mm; EX Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 DC wide angle, SB-800 wireless Flash, Wimberley Gimbal head, Manfrotto tripods and monopods, Manfrotto Joystick head, Better Beamer flash extender... plus other bits and bobs and include a large set of studio lights, soft boxes, snoots, barn doors, colour gels, diffusers, reflectors, backdrops, backdrop stands etc.

I've been working with Native birds and wildlife for as long as I can remember, and for many years I taught both Avian Medicine and Wildlife care, as well as being involved in several endangered species projects. It is strange that it is only in the past few years I actually picked up a camera and learned to capture images of our amazing fauna. As I write I am trying to care for two 15 hour old Masked Lapwing chicks that were brought to me by a Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Carer, who would have thought that such small creatures could be so challenging? Hopefully I will have some images of them for you as they grow up and are rehabilitated for release.

I apologise for rambling, lack of sleep and insufficient hours in the day, not to mention the fact they don't let me out very often (kidding!) result in long winded replies.

Cheers
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

I'm a very keen bird watcher (and artist) and love your photos!
What sort of camera do you use?

Annelise

Hi Ruth, just love your photos, very professional, or should I say artistic! I love the frogmouth is he a baby? We often have them breeding in our garden. Also love the brolgas of course, there's nothing quite like watching them. Keep up the good work and hope we get to see some more photos soon, :)

Hi Ruth, Your page is lovely, such a nice colour, and your photos are just as lovely, the photo of the brolga is my favourite, we have a few here but are in a very protected area, their numbers are dwindling, so its great to see a photo of one,

Hi again Lesley, you originally contacted me about this little guy - one of my personal favourite bird characters - I thought I would share him with the group here
